Spice and style: Clearwater Mall’s Made in India Market

There’s not much that can convince you to leave the comfort of your home on a cold Joburg day… unless it’s the promise of authentic flavours, vibrant culture, and the lively buzz of a market worth braving the chill for.
This year, Clearwater Mall is celebrating a special milestone – its 21st year – and they’re doing it in style. The Upper Mall Parking Area has been transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour, flavour, and festive flair with the Made in India Market. Running until 17 August, this culturally inclusive celebration brings together bold shopping, big energy, and a whole lot of heart.
Clearwater Mall has always been one of my favourites in Johannesburg, and this event just reminded me why.
Stepping into the market, we were immediately wrapped in a swirl of spiced aromas, upbeat music, and warm welcomes. Henna artists worked their magic nearby, while stalls brimmed with saris, dhotis, jewellery, shoes, and so much more. I couldn’t help but think, “I really need to be invited to an Indian wedding someday.”
Of course, the main draw for us was the food – and it didn’t disappoint. We kicked things off with fragrant Indian tea and a bread pakora, a North Indian breakfast-time snack made with bread slices, spiced potatoes, herbs, and a light batter. It was crisp, comforting, and oh-so-good.
Next came a variety of samosas – potato, chicken, mutton, and a cheesy corn version that quickly became my favourite. Each one was perfectly fried and packed with flavour.
We then had biryani vegetarian and mutton. The meat option was delicious, packed with flavour, from saffron, curry leaves, and star anise. Every bite was hearty and satisfying.
The Made in India Market is more than just a shopping and food stop – it’s an experience. It’s vibrant, expressive, and full of character, much like the shoppers who’ve been part of Clearwater Mall’s journey from the start.
Take a trip to the Clearwater Mall this week and make sure you don’t miss it. Go for the flavours, stay for the culture, and leave with memories (and maybe a little shopping bag or two).
